One the greatest actors of all time, Philip Seymour Hoffman, died earlier today at the age of 46. It is depressing and utterly shocking that he is now gone. RIP Phil.

This is a tragic loss. His talent inspired so many. When I first moved to New York in 1999 and took an acting class at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, my teacher was good friends with him and shared with us Philip’s “gerund” method of acting. I only saw him in person once, but it was memorable. It was the winter of 2012 and I was taking a theater class at the Labyrinth Theater, not far from both of our apartments. My class ran over and I was deep in thought as I left the theater and entered the lobby. I wasn’t looking where I was going and nearly fell on top of him (he and some other actors were patiently waiting for our class to leave so they could use the theater). He just looked up at me and smiled an understanding smile, like he understood what it was like to stumble out of a rehearsal space lost in thought. I was so dumbstruck that all I could do was smile back and think “wow, the great Philip Seymour Hoffman is about to work in the same space I just worked in. What a great world.”
